How can you convince a judge to lessen a sentencing on someone if you are the victim?

My boyfriend has to go to court the end of may for a domestic violence case. I am going to go to give an oral impact statement to the judge to try to get him to not go to jail because right now he faces 3 to 9 months. My family is hiring a lawyer specializing in domestic violence cases to try to convince the judge that my boyfriend needs counseling rather than jail time to help deal with his anger issues. Does anyone have any advice of other steps i can take as ';the victim'; to try to help lessen his sentencing? I'd really appreciate any and all advice! thanks =)How can you convince a judge to lessen a sentencing on someone if you are the victim?
i will keep out my personal opinion on this matter.

you can give your opinion from the victims perspective; but ultimately, it is up to the judge to make a ruling. it isn't unusual for woman victims of domestic violence to ask for their abusers to get a lenient sentence, so the judge may not be phased by what you have to say. if that's the case, you can't really do anything else to change his mind. How can you convince a judge to lessen a sentencing on someone if you are the victim?
Am no expert, but I would say that your victim impact statement is your best bet. Your potential willingness as a victim to stand by your boyfriend ONLY if he does go to ';treatment'; might also help. On the other hand, a judge may believe that your support of your boyfriend is misguided and the judge might still reinforce the sentence in your own interest. Check with your lawyer (or the prosecutor in charge of your case) on the best approach for your case. A statement from your family may also help.

Having said that, you may want to reflect on WHY you want the sentence reduced. Violence of any kind in a love relationship is something that you should not tolerate - the next incident might be a lot more serious.

Good luck to the both of you.
if the trial is going to begin, don't show up then it will be dismissed, if it has already begun you can ask the judge to sentence him to anger management classes instead of jail, you can also ask for the charges to be dropped on the grounds you changed your mind but that could back fire and you will be charged with perjury
